All watches you purchase are able to tell the time, but a fine watch has much more to offer. This type of watch adds luxury and quality to the mix. It is the kind of timepiece you are able to hand down as an heirloom from generation to generation. The focus on a fine watch is solely on the mechanism and quality. Manufacturers produce a watch that must be accurate at all times and under all conditions. During the manufacturing process, a great deal of time and effort is put into producing a timepiece that is exceptional on the outside as well as on the inside. For this reason, many of our fine watches are handcrafted to perfection and this is what makes a luxury timepiece.

What are some of the characteristics that make a fine or luxury watch? You will find that dedication to craft and quality are of utmost importance and this is what forms the essence of luxury. It’s what turns a regular watch into an exquisite item. Only the best mechanisms and parts are used in the manufacturing process. Many of the watches are handmade, so the concept of a luxury watch is definitely based on quality and not price. The Foundation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) in their report, The White Paper on Fine Watchmaking, classifies fine watchmaking. They focus on several areas and criteria required to measure up as a fine watch. They take into consideration such things as the production process, style, design, and after-sales services amongst other things.

Something else that defines a fine/luxury watch, is that of a status symbol. Fine watches are worn by those with high social standings in society. This has been the case ever since the watch was invented. Back in the day, it cost a fortune to even be in possession of a timepiece. I’m sure many would recognize the old pocket watch. If you had one back in the 1800s, you were definitely well-off. Today, you have more affordable mass-produced watches to choose from, but a fine watch still stands out with its unique designs and quality. Watches offered by Watch World are far more than this, as our watches do not only acknowledge the genuine quality of the workmanship but also give the wearer a good feeling about themselves.

Various Brands and Fine Luxury Watches

As discussed above, there are a number of things that define a fine or luxury watch. Some may obtain and see their timepiece as something to pass on to their children, or it may simply be a sign of success. There may be a few differences in why, but everyone is on the same page when it comes to making a choice. A fine watch offers luxury through quality and excellence, unique design, and superb performance, with no regard to the costs involved.

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” Vince Lombardi

Visit the Watch World website, a place where you will be able to browse through our selection and find the watch that suits your lifestyle. In the pursuit of excellence, here are the 3 brands that might catch your interest:

Ingersoll Watches

Ingersoll has been producing top quality, procession watches since 1892 and has received world acclaim from many prominent figures. They have a superb collection of fine watches, a first-class example is The Apsley. This watch is known for its accuracy and is a perfect example of a watch that would suit a gentleman with style. What makes it so unique? The watch has a large stainless steel gold-coloured case with a beautifully stitched genuine brown leather strap. The piece has a quartz movement, which guarantees its accuracy. The manufacturers are so confident about the quality of the watch, that it carries a lifetime guarantee. Another best seller in this range is The Hatton.

This watch has the same characteristics as The Apsley, but with a stunning rose gold coloured stainless steel case. The brand is well-known in producing stylish as well as practical watches, suited both for men and women. Each style is timeless, and you won’t have to worry about it going out of fashion. There are many styles to choose from – a watch for any occasion. The Ingersoll watch is a great choice for those looking for quality and precision as well as style.

CAT Watches

The CAT brand has garnered a reputation for being resilient and able to withstand extreme conditions. The original CAT machines were exposed to harsh environments, cold, dirt and have always been superior in such conditions. They have carried this durability and precision over into their CAT gear collections, including their watches. CAT watches offer all its wearers a very reliable timepiece under all conditions. You can be a businessman in the boardroom or a rock climber out in the untamed wild – there will be a watch that suits your needs. The brand has created a series of watches that stand for quality, durability, as well as incorporating unique technology.

The CAT watch range has a large selection of luxury watches, one of these is The CAT AG MULTI. This watch has a large stainless-steel case, with the dial displaying the CAT colours of black and yellow. The display is analogue and comes with a quartz movement, which provides for a very accurate timepiece. The watch has a stainless-steel strap that makes it a functional and very stylish watch for any wearer. This is the perfect watch that meets the demands of an active lifestyle, and does it in style.

Millner Watches

Millner watches have been classed amongst the very best in their price category. You will need to buy your very own watch in order to know how good it feels when you have it on. The watch offers a stylish look at an affordable price, and you won’t be disappointed. The MINI-DARK ONE is one of their fine watch collection timepieces and comes with the following great characteristics: In keeping with their distinctive design and what makes a fine watch, it has a dial diameter of only 28 mm, case thickness of 6 mm and an alloy case. All these features considerably reduce the weight of the watch. The watch comes with a stainless-steel strap and a quartz movement for accuracy, but it is not water-resistant. An affordable modern timepiece for the modern man or woman.

Myths regarding Fine Watches

When considering purchasing a watch, most of us will simply go to the shop and buy what is readily available, most probably a battery-powered quartz watch. We wouldn’t even consider a luxury or fine watch. Many would think, is it worth it to buy a fine watch when other types of watches are readily available? This ultimately affected business for those who were selling precision luxury watches. How did they overcome this? Rebranding. The fine watches became luxury items that were handmade to perfection, and something people would desire or aspire to own. Even so, over the years there have been a few misunderstandings or myths that came about regarding fine watches.

Here are a few of them:

Many say it is a waste of money to spend so much on a watch if all it does is tell the time. This is not the case, as these watches are investments and can become heirlooms passed on from generation to generation.

They don’t keep time accurately. This is true if compared to a quartz watch, but even then, the battery can fail. Both types of watches can be very accurate if properly handled.

Some say the more jewels the watch has inside the better it is. It is true that a fine watch works with jewels like rubies, but in this day and age, the mechanics of the watch is what’s more important.

If your watch says ‘Swiss Made’ then it is regarded as being 100% Swiss. This is not the case as a watch that says ‘Swiss Made’ only has around 60% Swiss parts.

Is the Smart Watch taking over and is the fine or luxury watch on its way out? The truth is that the Smart Watch is gaining ground, but the Swiss are also advancing in this direction as well.

Is it true that a quartz watch is not as stylish as a mechanical/fine watch? No, the quartz watches have taken over the market these days and can easily compete with the mechanical watches.

Today, it does seem like the Smart Watch is taking the world by storm. On the other hand, if you are looking for a brand-new watch, then nothing can beat an exquisitely made luxury watch. You will be gaining a quality piece of art that will last a lifetime and even longer. The craftsmanship that goes into the manufacture of a fine watch is unique and cannot be compared to anything else on the market. You will be buying into a rich history, a watch with unsurpassed quality and craftsmanship, something that increases in value over time, and a watch that is reliable and dependable for many years. A luxury or fine watch can be worn with pride.

Cool, Affordable Millner watches.

Cool, Affordable Millner watches accessible online, delivered straight to your doorstep

In this month’s blog post we will be looking at some of the incredible Millner watches that watch world has to offer. Your one-stop-shop for watch lovers. So how about treating yourself to a stylish yet affordable watch online to grow your collection? Technology has proved to be very helpful in these times, no need to risk queueing inline. Heck, you don’t even need to wear a facemask when shopping online with us. So let’s look at the selection of Millner watches that will certainly bring back a smile to your face.

Most of Millner’s watches make use of a Japanese quartz movement. It’s not so much the quartz that is of Japanese origin, but rather the mechanism which a Japanese watchmaker developed in 1969. And since then it’s been used in literally thousands of watches all over the world. The Japanese quartz movement functions by using a battery and you guessed it, a tiny piece of crystal quartz.

The thing that we love about Millner watches is the modern, sleek design. And these watches are unisex, well most of them anyway. Not only are they elegant, but what Millner stands out for is the fact that you can get a super trendy watch and not tear a hole in your wallet. With youth day around the corner, these watches make a great gift and will be appreciated by even the finest watch connoisseur. After all these watches were made to be strapped on the wrists of watch lovers.

Millner regents – Silver Black

The regent’s range is for the watch lover that loves a sleek, elegant timepiece and tends to avoid bulky and flashy watches. It’s only when you strap one on your wrist that you can feel how perfectly balanced and slim these watches are. It comes in an alloy case with a genuine leather strap. The white face and black strap along with the silver finish on the face perfectly harmonize the elegant characteristics of the regent’s range.

The case is 7mm thick and this timepiece is shock resistant. This classy watch has a two-year warranty from the date of purchase and it covers any manufacturing defect, should one occur.

Millner regents – Silver Black

If you’re more into natural colours then consider the regent’s silver brown timepiece. Like all the other Millner watches, this one features a Japanese quartz movement with a hardened mineral crystal face. And It’s one of those watches that bring a smile to your face, with a quick flip of the wrist. Like the silver black watch, this one too comes in a white face but sports a dark brown genuine leather strap.

The watch case is made from alloy and the hour hand is a steel blue colour. If you prefer a lightweight and super slim watch, this is the one for you.
In September we celebrate heritage month. A day where we remember and celebrate our diverse cultural heritage as South Africans. Our heritage forms a big part of who we are and our self-expression.

Every man has got a legacy and it is exactly that, what we are all trying to protect and preserve for generations to come.

Just like every man has got his heritage and unique legacy so does businesses and brands across the world. The Ingersoll company has a rich history dating back as far back as 1882. Another interesting little fact is that they did not start out producing watches either. Rather, they started out with rubber stamps. So how does a small company from New York get into the watch business? Two brothers recognized the need for inexpensive watches.

They wanted to create a watch that is affordable to everyone, one that sold for just a dollar. Charles and Robert Ingersoll had one problem. They had no clue how to start up and run a mass-market production facility nor did they have any idea how to distribute their watches effectively to a larger audience. Eventually, they overcame these hurdles and were at the forefront of producing quality, reliable and affordable men’s watches.

In this article, we will be discussing the top 9 Ingersoll watches that will form a part of your legacy, and can eventually be handed down for many generations to come. If you’re an avid watch collector, aficionado or just a general watch lover, stick around because we will be featuring some amazing Ingersoll’s that bare testament of true heritage.

Body:

First up on our list of collector’s timepieces is this stunning Ingersoll the Armstrong. The pin and buckle clasp means you can take it off or put it on in a jiffy. The movement is automatic and it is water-resistant up to 10ATM. The great thing about Ingersoll watches is that they come with scratch-resistant glass for more protection and an added bonus is the lifetime warranty. This timepiece was designed for the true watch aficionado who appreciates classic watch artistry and classiness. If you’re looking for an heirloom piece that can be passed down for generations, leaving the imprints of your legacy, this is the one.

For our fifth selection, we revisit the infamous Charles collection. Much like the Charles from earlier, this black and gold timepiece features an intricate dial face which highlights the beautiful craftsmanship from Ingersoll. This timepiece is remarkably balanced with a case diameter of 44mm and a case depth of 13mm. The automatic movement offers the wearer longevity, unlike a battery-powered or quartz watch. Some of the features of this fascinating timepiece include a genuine leather strap and a stylish pin and buckle clasp that’s as easy to remove as it is to put on your wrist. If you are a watch collector, this is a timepiece that can be passed down for generations. If something were to happen to your beloved timepiece you don’t have to fear because all of the Ingersoll’s comes with a standard lifetime warranty.

14 Seconds of Chronograph precision

“Houston we have a problem” the infamous saying we’ve all heard before when things don’t exactly go as planned, but have you ever wondered where it comes from?

The year was 1970. April the 11th, three men took off in a space shuttle from Cape Canaveral in Florida USA, on a routine mission to the moon. Their mission was to safely land on the moon and return home after the lunar landing, but as we all know from the movie Apollo 13, things didn’t turn out too well for the three crew members on board.

When the crew was approximately 32 186Km away from earth and closing down on the moon, a warning signal popped up indicating low-pressure on a hydrogen tank in the spacecraft called the Odyssey. Assuming the signal was just indicating that the hydrogen tank just needed to resettle by heating and fanning the gas tank which is called “cryo stir” they decided to run the monotonous procedure.

Moments later, chaos erupted. Their oxygen was slowly depleting and the spacecraft had no power. You can only imagine what was going through their minds at that point. It was then and there where the crew notified mission control that “Houston we’ve had a problem”. That night on 13 April 1970, a spark caused by an exposed wire caused the oxygen tank to set on fire, ripping one tank apart and damaging another inside the craft.

This ultimately led them to make a decision, which was to return to earth. Alas, upon their return, mission control realized that the craft was off its route and entering the earth’s atmosphere was going to be a tremendous feat if they somehow managed to pull it off. The solution? Mission control figured out that if they turned on the engines for 14 seconds it would be enough for them to get their returning trajectory at such a point where they would safely enter the atmosphere. The only problem was that the power in the craft was switched off, meaning they had no indication of time and to make things worse, if they overshot the seconds on the engines the spacecraft could explode.

It was at that point where the Swiss saved America. If it weren’t for the chronograph watch that one of the crew members used to count down the 14 seconds, things could’ve turned out much differently for them. They ended up splashing down safely in the Pacific Ocean near Samoa on April 17.

In light of this, we thought it would be a great idea to showcase some of our most loved Ingersoll chronograph watches in this article. Who knows, they might end up saving your life too, but if they don’t at least you’ll have a timepiece that can be passed down for generations to come, leaving your legacy on the wrists of your loved ones.

Body:

The Ingersoll Delta is an astonishing timepiece that any watch collector would appreciate in his collection. The classic and elegant features on this watch afford the wearer a sleek modern design. It also features a pin and buckle clasp and scratch-resistant mineral glass to protect your investment from any damage. Buying an Ingersoll ensures your watch is protected for life with the lifetime warranty.

Next up we’ve got the remarkable Ingersoll the Hatton. Another classic and elegant design, this watch was made to be strapped on by a genuine collector. The smooth design of the case combined with its off-white dials and cream leather strap makes it a great investment for any collector or watch lover. What makes this watch stand out even further is the immaculate crown and pusher that brings a minimalistic balance to the watch.

If you’re a collector that’s looking for some flair, well then you would love this next Ingersoll Michigan. The two-tone rose gold and silver case is what sets it apart from other chronographs. Ingersoll has beautifully designed the crown and pusher buttons along with the sub-dials and date window on this watch. It features a genuine leather strap with a push-button clasp type for a quick release.

Next up in our chronograph collection, we’ve got the elegant Ingersoll Scovill. This eye-catching watch was designed to make a bold statement on the wearer’s wrist. The Scovill is constructed from a stainless steel material with a powerful black and silver dial and case combination. Unlike the Michigan watch above, this Ingersoll Scovill features a very elegant crown and pusher buttons that are not too bulky. Like most high end watches the Scovill comes with a pin and buckle clasp and a sturdy stainless steel strap. You can rest assured that your legacy timepiece will be protected from any damages that might occur to the face, with scratch-resistant mineral glass and a robust wooden display box in which it sits. Buying one of these means you secure your place in the Ingersoll hall of fame with the lifetime warranty it comes with.

The textured black dial colour and the silver stainless steel case elegantly showcases the unique craftsmanship of the Ingersoll company. Any collector that’s on the lookout for a timepiece that can be passed down for generations, would absolutely love this ST JOHNS timepiece. The pin strap is made from genuine leather and the face is protected by scratch-resistant glass, ensuring it looks as good as the day you put it on your wrist for the first time.

Rose gold has slowly forged its way into the hearts of watch collectors all around the globe. In light of that, we chose to feature this truly magnificent chronograph, The regent. Ingersoll has managed to perfect their craft and this watch is testament to fine watches all over the world. The regent might be the only watch in your collection that you would have a hard time parting with the day you hand over your legacy. The rose gold case and deep blue dials in combination with the striking sub-dials and date window elevate this watch to the top of any watch collector’s collection. One amazing feature of the REGENT is that it comes with a tachymeter bezel so this is probably the one that would save your life should the time ever be a factor. Because this watch is bound to be your new-found favourite, they’ve gone and added scratch-resistant mineral glass to keep it as new as the day you bought it.

Last but not least on our list of chronograph watches is the breath taking Ingersoll The Grafton. Just like Michigan from earlier in this article, the Grafton comes in a striking two-tone gold and silver colour combination. This elegant timepiece with its cream dial finish and the brown leather strap will get the attention of any serious collector. What we love about this watch is how sophisticatedly they placed the sub-dials and date window. The slimmer crown and pusher buttons on the side beautifully round this watch off and affords it a much more elegant feel whilst wearing it. You can swiftly take it off with the push button clasp and you’ll never have to worry about scratching the face because it’s protected just like all the other Ingersoll’s.

If you find this article insightful, share it with a friend and tag us. Looking for a luxury timepiece crafted by master watchmakers? Shop online now and discover our wide range of luxury watches.

In this article, we will be discussing each section separately. The sections we will be covering are:

Watch Parts

Watch movements

Watch complications

Different types of luxury watches

Different watches for different occasions

Body:

Watch Parts simply explained

Watches are made up out of hundreds of parts that are in charge of controlling your watches accuracy, durability and style of course. Below we will look at each component and briefly explain the purpose of each.

Aperture

The aperture is the small window on the dial that displays information such as the date, month or year.

Bezel

The top ring on top of a watch that encircles the dial is commonly referred to as a bezel. Certain bezels can also display additional information such as GMT.

Bracelet

This is either a leather strap that sits around the wrist or a metal band to keep the watch in position.

Case

The body of the watch that protects the “organs” of the watch is called the Case. The case plays an important role in preventing dust particles or water that may penetrate the watch. Cases are also designed to absorb shock when the watch falls. The quality of shock absorption will depend on the brand of the watch.

Crown

The crown of a watch is the device (knob) on the side of the watch that lets you wind the watch (manual wind mechanical watches) It can also stop the watch when it is pulled out which would save you some valuable battery life.

Crystal

The crystal refers to the transparent glass that covers the face of the watch and its function is to protect the dial of your watch. Modern watches come out with scratch-resistant crystal however, it would be wise to find out from the retailer whether or not the crystal is scratch resistant before you make your purchase.

Dial

The dial is the face of the watch that sits below the crystal.

Hands

The hands of the watch refer to the time indicators on the dial. You get three variants which indicate the hours, the minutes and even the seconds. The hands of different watches can allow the wearer of the watch to measure speed, distance and in some watches, they can measure air supply which is more commonly used in diving watches.

Helium Escape Valve

Helium valves are found on diving watches. They release pressure in the watch when it reaches its maximum depth. Ordinary watches do not have this function, although they are designed to withstand certain amounts of pressure underwater. This too will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Lugs

The lugs are the slim metal bars that connect the case to the strap of the watch.

Movement

The movement refers to the movement that powers the watch and drives all of the timekeeping functions. It is also known as the calibre.

Pusher

This is the button on the side of the watch that activates a complication such as a chronograph watch.

Sub-dial

The sub-dial is a smaller dial than the main one. It provides the wearer with additional information such as in the case of a chronograph’s recorded time.

The different types of movements

There are three types of movements in luxury watches, namely:

Manual

A manual movement requires regular winding of the watch’s crown that provides the power behind the movement of dials and sub-dials.

Automatic

Automatic watches are powered by mechanical movements that stem from the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist. They are also known as self-winding watches. Whenever the wearer decides to take it off, it will stop the movement after a while of inactivity.

Watch World has a wide range of automatic movement watches such as the incredible Ingersoll Apsley. It incorporates an automatic movement and is designed to showcase a postmodern timepiece that is extremely accurate and not to mention Good Looking.

Quartz

Quartz movements refer to a battery-operated movement that does not require the wearer to wind it up. Quartz powered watches are typically less expensive than those of manual and automatic watches. Shop our wide range of quartz movement watches online that is as good looking as they are functional.

What are watch complications and what are the different types?

When we speak about watch complications we are not referring to any problems that the watch might have. This term simply refers to the function of the watch other than timekeeping that indicates the hours, minutes or seconds. Below is a list of the most popular complications and their functions.

Annual Calendar

It displays the date and month but does not account for leap years.

Chronograph

The chronograph complication describes the time functionality of a watch. It is commonly referred to as a stopwatch which allows the wearer to measure elapsed periods.

Date Window

The date window is commonly found as an aperture at 3 O’clock or 6 O’clock. Some date windows have a magnifying ‘drop’ on the crystal also called cyclops in watch jargon.

Dual time

This displays local time zones and an additional time zone.

Minute repeater

A minute repeater chimes the time when activated. They usually have different sounds for minutes, hours and quarter-hours.

Moon phase

A moon phase display indicates the phases of the moon

Perpetual calendar

A perpetual calendar displays the day, date and month. It is important to note that a perpetual calendar does consider the leap year.

Power reserve

This function indicates the amount of power left before it needs to be wound.

Tachymeter

This function in watches measures the speed over fixed distances and is commonly found on the watches of F1 drivers or pilots.

What are the different types of luxury watches available to me?

Luxury watches are typically broken down in four specific categories, separated with different designs and features.

Dress watches

Dress watches are elegant and sophisticated with minimalistic streamlined profiles. They are the perfect companion for the office, evening wear or any other sophisticated attire.

Sport watch

Sports watches get their name from the robust and sturdy construction. These timepieces can endure rugged conditions whilst maintaining accurate timekeeping.

Pilot watch

Pilot watches were originally designed for aviators. These watches typically have larger cases and easy-to-read dials. They provide additional timekeeping complications such as chronographs for measuring elapsed periods.

Diving watch

Diving watches present themselves as the ultimate timekeepers for divers. They are constructed with sturdy cases that are designed to withstand the depths of the sea. Diving watches are also typically constructed with complications that ultimately helps divers manage their oxygen supply underwater.

Many may wonder what a chronograph watch is and how it works. The answer to this question is really simple – a chronograph watch is an ordinary watch that tells time, but it also has a stopwatch function which forms part of the watches movement. The movements of these watches can be mechanical, where it is self-winding or automatic. On the other hand, it can have a quartz movement that is battery powered. Chronograph watches are not only manufactured as wristwatches but can also be made as a pocket watch.

So, how does it work? The watch works just like an ordinary wristwatch, as it has a long hour hand as well as a shorter minute hand. There is also a long second hand; however, this hand only operates when the stopwatch function is activated. There is a smaller sub-dial on the face of the watch, and this gives you the seconds. This dial operates continually just as the hour and minute hands and is situated at the 3 o’clock position. There is another smaller sub-dial found at the 9 o’clock position, which operates when the stopwatch function is activated and records the number of minutes passed. Finally, another smaller sub-dial located at the 6 o’clock position, shows the hours that the stopwatch function has recorded. The more intricate and advanced chronograph watches have a fourth smaller sub-dial, which is capable of recording fractions of a second.

How do you then activate the stopwatch function of the watch? It is equipped with a small button situated at the 2 o’clock position. When this button is pushed it starts the stopwatch function and all the smaller sub-dials will begin to rotate. When it is pushed again the stopwatch function will stop and the desired time-lapse will be recorded. There is another second small button that resets all the sub-dials back to zero when pushed. The chronograph watch is also equipped with a Tachymetre scale, this is situated around the circumference or bezel of the watches dial. This scale is intended to measure speed, distance or it can even be used to measure fuel consumption.

In the next section, we are going to explain the difference between a chronograph watch, mechanical watches with quartz or self-winding movements, and digital watches.

Chronograph Watches

The chronograph watch was first invented by Louis Moinet in 1816 for the purpose of tracking the stars and planets in real-time. However, it was only in the early 20th century that watch manufactures introduced the chronograph watch to the general public. A great example of this kind of watch is the CAT OPERATOR CAMO chronograph watch. What makes this watch so special? Pilots use this watch to make very precise and quick timing calculations, and for this reason, all Apollo astronauts are equipped with a chronograph watch.

The military and navy also make use of this kind of equipment in order to track the speed and distance of missiles that have been launched. Race car drivers, as well as their pit staff, are supplied with this type of watch, as it can measure speed and distance travelled. Deep-sea divers also make use of this type of watch to track the speed and depth that they dive.

Also, it is not uncommon to see a nurse or doctor make use of this type of watch, which helps record the heartbeat and pulse rate of their patients. The ordinary man on the street can also make use of this type of watch, for use at home and cooking time in the kitchen. However, the main function that stands out is the Tachymetre, which is located around the outside of the dial. How does this function work? When using this part of the watch, you will be able to track speed as well as distance travelled. Firstly, let’s see how the speed tracking works. Imagine you are at the racetrack and want to track the speed of a car.

First, you need to know the distance between the two points you are tracking. Then simply push the start button when the car pulls off and push it again when it passes the second or endpoint. Where the long second-hand stops, is the amount of time it took to travel the distance. The reading on the Tachymetre records the speed the car travelled. What about tracking distance? The same principle is followed, but now you need to know the speed travelled. The car pulls off and must reach a chosen speed, which must then remain constant. When you reach this constant speed, push the start button. When the second-hand reaches that speed on your Tachymetre, you will discover the distance travelled. Considering purchasing one of these amazing watches? Here are two very reliable and affordable brands to choose from INGERSOLL THE APSLEY or the CAT OPERATOR CAMO.

Mechanical or Quartz Watches

Let’s first consider the mechanical watch. In this category, we find two types of watch movements, self-winding or automatic. The self-winding watch has a mainspring inside that needs to be frequently wound up manually by using the button on the side of the watch. While the automatic movement is wound up by the movement of the watch on the wearers’ wrist. One of the main disadvantages of the self-winding watch is that there is a possibility you can overwind the mechanism of the watch, which can cause irreparable damage. The self-winding watch also needs to be cleaned and serviced regularly to keep it in good working order.

Next is the quartz watch. The main advantage of buying a quartz watch is that it doesn’t have to be wound up manually. The watch is driven by a battery and therefore automatically keeps the time and can last for many years. Of course, the battery can run down and has to be changed, but that only happens very seldom. Another advantage of the quartz watch is that it is a great deal more accurate than the self-winding watch.

So, how does it work? The battery generates an electric current, which in turn goes through the quartz crystal. The current then causes the crystal to oscillate at a high frequency, which then runs a small motor inside the watch. Once the small motor starts running, it causes the hands of the watch to move.

Here are two simple reasons why you should choose a quartz watch:

The quartz watch is a great deal cheaper than the mechanical watch and it also requires a lot less maintenance.

The quartz watch is a great deal lighter in weight than the mechanical watch

Digital display watches

When you are looking to buy a new watch, the first thing that attracts your attention is the watch face and its appearance. There are basically only two dial displays you can choose, the Digital or Analogue display. The Analogue watch face has moving hands, which give you hours, minutes and seconds. However, the Digital display gives you the time in digital format by using numbers or other types of symbols.

The screen or watch face of a digital watch is shown in LED or LCD numbers or symbols. In order for this to work, a digital display watch is usually powered by a battery, which means it has a quartz movement. Today, the digital display watches are a great deal more popular than the analogue display. So, the question is, what attracts the attention of a watch buyer and why do many people prefer a digital display rather than an analogue display?

Here are some of the reasons:

Many watch buyers who are opposed to buying a digital display watch argue that the battery can fail. This may be true; however, it has been proven that the digital watches battery only fails after five or even up to ten years. To overcome this problem completely, there are digital display watches on the market today that are solar-powered, which means that it can recharge itself and will never fail.

The digital watch display is a lot easier to read than an analogue watch. This is a great advantage especially for our children as well as our senior citizens.

The accuracy of the digital display watch is far greater than any of the other watch types.

One of the main attractions for the scholar or employee that needs to make calculations is the calculator function a digital watch display offers.

An added advantage for the digital display watch is the introduction of smartwatches. Here you will be able to play games, watch TV and so much more.

The Fashion Watch Overview

Nobody to date has found a single definition for fashion watches. There are a number of titles out there namely fashion watch, dress watch or formal watch. However, after all is said and done, many agree on one thing – the main emphasis of a fashion watch is in the design and its appearance.

The focus is placed solely on the brand name and very little attention is given to the intricate workings of the watches movements. Therefore, many fashion watches are supplied with a cheaper quartz movement.

Fashion watches are usually manufactured by companies that supply clothing and all types of accessories. This means that the company doesn’t use the sale of watches as their main source of income. Fashion watches are made to fit in with the latest styles of clothing and jewellery. When purchasing a fashion watch, a buyer is solely interested in the way it looks rather than in its function.

This appears to be the only logical reason why anyone would pay such a lot of money for a basic watch.

Why would somebody want to buy a fashion watch? You may have received an invitation to a formal lunch or a business event and you need to buy a new outfit for the occasion. Yet, you feel there is something missing. A beautiful fashion watch is just the thing you need to complete your look. Rest assured, there is a fashion watch out there for you, one that fits any fashion style.

What if you have to attend multiple social functions during the year, does this mean you have to have a new watch each time? No, it’s certainly not necessary, as you can use the same fashion watch for a number of different occasions.

All you need to do is have a couple of different watch straps available. Simply change the strap you have, and you instantly create a completely new look, one that suits your fashion style for a specific event.

Your style is reflected in your clothing and in the accessories you wear. So, choosing a stylish watch is important in creating the look you want. Today, you are sure to find a watch that will suit every occasion, from formal business events to casual outings.

Men and women select watches that will match their outfit but will also for how it looks on their wrist, and how it makes them feel.

Most important of all, the right watch and outfit make a statement, it reveals your style and defines who you are. You will soon realise when you have to choose the right watch for a special occasion, that the combinations available appear to be endless. You will have to choose between different colours, styles and materials.

Choosing the perfect fashion watch

The question is how do you choose the correct watch for your special event? Here are some guidelines to help you make the right choice.Below are some characteristics of Fashion Watches, which is designed to suit most styles:

Choose a slimmer profile in order to be able to fit more comfortably under your shirt cuff.

A watch case usually not larger than 40mm or a maximum of 46 mm.

Most fashion watches have leather straps, but there is nothing wrong with a stainless steel strap.

Your metal type, it can be made from yellow, white or rose gold, stainless steel or even platinum.

Try to choose a watch that matches your selected outfit and make sure it doesn’t draw too much attention.

The face or dial of a fashion watch is usually very simple, with an analogue display having an hour, minute and second hand. However, there are also many great fashion watches that have a digital display, which would look great with your outfit.

Apart from these guidelines above for fashion watches, a Fine Watch or Chronograph Watch can also be an acceptable choice to wear to a formal event.

What to wear

Let us now consider what type of watch you would choose for formal business or corporate functions. These types of events require style and a professional look. You may want to consider a watch that has the following characteristics:

It needs to have a gold or stainless-steel metal case with a leather or stainless-steel strap.

A black or brown watch dial with simple markers or roman numerals would be perfect. As it is a fashion watch, the movement can be either mechanical or quartz

The CAT AG brand watch is ideal for all types of events, and it comes at a very affordable price. This particular watch has hour, minute and second hands. The watch comes with simple markers that are gold coloured for the 15, 30, 45- and 60-minute divisions, and silver coloured for the remaining major minute indicators. Provision has also been made on the watch face for a small aperture that shows the date in digital format. The watch also has a black/camel, or silver coloured stainless-steel case, which is 46 mm in diameter. The face or dial has the same colour feature.

The display of this fashion watch is analogue, which is what is required for a formal event. As these types of watches are about style and appearance, this watch is equipped with a quartz movement. The watch is supplied with dark brown smooth leather or stainless-steel straps, in order to better compliment the style of your outfit.

Another feature of this watch, which is often overlooked or not even considered, is that it is waterproof to a depth of 100m. When buying a fashion watch, this type of feature is very seldom considered, as no one is going to go deep-sea diving with their Fashion Watch strapped to their wrist. However, there is a strong possibility that while out at your formal function, you may be caught in a sudden downpour. This waterproof feature will give you peace of mind in this situation, ensuring that your watch will in no way be damaged.

What type of watch would you look for if you had a casual weekend function to attend? In this situation, it is not necessary for you to make a boldfaced statement. You need a softer approach. Look no further than the CAT TWIST UP fashion watch, which will prove perfect for informal occasions. The watch is also available at a very affordable price.

This particular watch has an analogue format. Provision has also been made on the watches face or dial for a small aperture that shows the date in digital format. The watch body is stainless steel and is coloured black or silver. The body is 46 mm in diameter and is supplied with a quartz movement. There is also a watch that has a stainless-steel strap if this suits you better. The watch is also waterproof to a depth of 100m.

Maybe over the weekend, you have an invitation to enjoy a night out with your friends. What watch would be suitable for this occasion? A night out to enjoy with lots of fun and laughter, so the watch you choose must be able to suit the occasion, making you feel free and happy. There is no doubt in my mind that the CAT GROOVY watch would be perfect for this occasion. This particular watch has an analogue format.

The body of the watch is made from a very resilient polycarbonate material and is black in colour. The body is 44.5 mm in diameter and supplied with a quartz movement.
Junior Olympic climber –Achieving the impossible.

Junior Olympic climber –From Landing on the moon to summiting the beast called Everest, we stretch the limits and we test the boundaries. Often we achieve these amazing feats with a companion on our wrists.

Olympic climber –In this month’s blog post we’ve got something exciting for you. Watch World spent some time with David Naude and we got to ask him a couple of questions regarding the world of boulder climbing.

Junior Olympic climber –David is a full-time sports climber from Cape town who has competed across the world with some of the strongest up and coming talents in the climbing scene. His passion for the outdoors is incredible and has led him to some gem destinations in South Africa. Some of his favourite climbing spots include the Rocklands found in the beautiful Cederberg mountains.

In fact, David loves this area so much that he decided to start an NPO to protect the area for generations to come.

But more on that later, let’s jump to the interview we did with him.

When you go out on a climbing expedition, what do you normally pack?

Most of the time when I go climbing in Rocklands with friends we take all our camping essentials such as food, climbing clothes, sleeping gear and coffee for those early mornings. I also take like 4 pairs of climbing shoes for various climbs and climbing elements when I go out climbing. Other than that we take our boulder pads for some insurance when we do fall off the boulders.

Do you and your buddies challenge yourself when climbing and like how would that work?

With Bouldering, in general, the sport is based on challenging yourself. We use a grading system to decide what the difficulty level is of a certain boulder that we climb. Because climbing is really an individual sport, we try and get each other to attempt climbs that’s not particularly in our comfort zone and that’s where the challenge starts.

What are the elements that make up a good rock climber?

I think there’s a lot of factors that contribute to being a good climber. Things like physical strength, finger and shoulder strength play a huge role, but so does mental strength. Having a solid mindset goes a long way to ultimately achieving your goal.

When you guys are climbing how does the session work? And for how long do you climb?

So our session starts off with a cup of coffee and then we decide on which boulders we want to go and climb for the day. Usually, this involves somewhat of a hike where we also carry our crash pads with us. When we get to our preferred boulder we arrange the falling pads in a safe position so that you know the landing is good and that you won’t hurt yourself. After that, we normally start off with a warmup where we take an easier climb to get some blood flowing and then we slowly transition over to our harder boulder for today and start planning the route and our climb.

How many hours have you spent climbing and sharpening your skills?

I started climbing at the age of 12. My brother in law was into mountain rescue and he kind of got me into the climbing scene. Back in 2008 I bought my first harness and went to the climbing gym on occasion. I stopped climbing all together for a while and then in 2012 I decided to go and do a competition and from there on out, I haven’t stopped climbing for more than a few days at a time. In terms of climbing hours, I wouldn’t even know where to start counting.

You seem to be quite competitive, would you say that this characteristic is prominent in most climbers?

In the competitive climbing scene everyone’s quite competitive. The people I climb with today are all my competitors for the Africa Cup which is the qualifier for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. We went to Europe to train for that and unfortunately, the qualifier got cancelled due to Covid-19. We’re hoping that in December the competition will be back on and that at least one of us can qualify for the Tokyo 2021. I must say that when I’m out in the Rocklands I don’t take it to competitively like I said the only battle is against yourself. I try not to be competitive when I’m bouldering but when it’s a competition it’s obviously a different story and it’s exactly the same for the other climbers I hang around with.

How long does a good climbing session/workout last for?

Normally we will head on out for the day leaving at like 11h00 and coming back at around 17h00. Depending on who comes along and what types of boulders we are trying to climb will determine our session for the day. However, in general, I climb for a bit more than four hours with breaks in between and lunch on the mountain, before my body is just too tired to go on.

How many times a week do you train?

I train usually about six times a week with a rest day every now and again. When I’m in Cape Town training, things are a bit more formal than it is out at Rocklands. When we are climbing on a rock we climb when we feel fresh and when the weather cooperates because we really want it to be cold and super dry for climbing.

So David how Important is timing in the climbing process?

When it comes to conquering some of the hardest boulders in the world, timing is everything. Knowing how long to rest between attempts is paramount in giving your muscles the maximum amount of energy possible in order to continue climbing boulders.

Do you wear a watch yourself?

Yes, I do. When I go out and climb I’ll use a fitness tracking watch to keep track of my progress and when I go out with friends I’ll wear something a little bit more sophisticated but functional to the occasion of course.

What is the comfort level of your watches?

I have never really had any problems with the comfort level of my watches. However, I would say that rubber straps are far more comfortable to wear for me, than leather straps or links. When you’re climbing you need your body as close to the rock, especially when it comes to grips so you don’t really want to be wearing a bulky watch.

How’s the durability of your previous watches?

Not very durable hey. They don’t seem to last very long in my industry.

Would you recommend a compact watch to another climber like yourself?

Definitely, something as simple as having the time on your wrist in a compact, durable and low maintenance manner is so useful from timing rests to knowing when to get up for that dawn patrol mission.

Who is your role model in the world of Rock climbing?

Many people inspire me in climbing. I usually get all of my inspiration from any climber trying hard to achieve what he didn’t think was possible and then they achieve it. Braking that mental barrier from “I can’t” to “I can” is something we all should get to experience.

Junior Olympic climber –David tell us a bit more about your project, saving the Rocklands?

So before lockdown, we actively used Rocklands as kind of our bouldering HQ and when everything closed down it had some devastating consequences for the area and the local communities around Rocklands. Tony and I decided to get the climbing community involved and decided to start a crowdfunding site which eventually morphed into Save Rocklands. With the major loss in tourism, Rocklands can’t survive without our help, so we decided to sit down with the farmers and see what their needs are and how we can meet them. The Rocklands valley is one of the top three base bouldering destinations in the world, so it’s mostly depended on climbers that travel here every winter. Cape nature sold three thousand permits to international climbers coming down to Rocklands travelling from all over the world to come and climb these boulders. Without any of that income, the community was really struggling, so we decided to start helping where we can.

Junior Olympic climber –

From humble beginnings, David has excelled and achieved the unachievable. With cool resilience, pure grit and determination he’s on his way to scale all the way to the top of his field. Humans have always and will continue to push the limits, moving out of the confines of the achievable and progressively pushing to achieve the impossible.

A wrist companion that will be there when you achieve the unachievable is definitely this versatile and extremely durable CAT SPECIAL OPS1 which features a slim yet sporty design construction.
